The addition of sound effects is a great way to make a traditional PowerPoint presentation stand out. There are three ways to add production music to a PowerPoint presentation. Sound effects can be used to create a sudden surge of music, to play music when prompted, and to have background music rolling throughout the presentation.
Something important to keep in mind while creating a presentation is that not all audio files will automatically embed themselves into a PowerPoint presentation. Instead, the presentation links them to the external files on the computer. Unless the files are embedded manually, all the external audio files should be stored on the same disc as the presentation. To embed the files manually and be free from worrying about missing external files, save the presentation as a PowerPoint Package.

A Sudden Surge of Music
To create a sudden surge of music, there are two general steps to follow:

Step 1: Insert the audio file into the slide.
Go to Insert > Movies and Sounds > Sound from File.
Browse and find the desired audio file. PowerPoint accepts a wide variety of file formats, including, but not limited to, MP3, AIFF, WAVE and MIDI. Once the file is located, a popup will appear asking if it should play automatically; select “yes.” A media icon with four boxes (one on each corner) will appear on the slide which can be made invisible.

To hide the icon, go to Slideshow > Animations > and select “Off” from the drop-down menu; the icon will not be seen during the final presentation. If during preview the icon is still visible, there is another way to make it invisible. Give the file an animation property such as “Flash Once.” Test to make sure the function works. If using the “Flash Once” property, the media icon will flash one time. Go back to the Animations menu and select “Off.” The icon should be invisible this time.

Step 2: Make the audio play once when the slide comes up.
Go to the Animations menu again and select “Custom.” A window will open that allows the user to set preferences for the media object. If a dialogue box says “No options are available for this object,” make sure the media file is selected from the objects box on the left. Check the box labeled “Play using animation order.” Select “Order and Timing” from the top of the window. At the bottom of the “Order and Timing” options there will be two more options: “Automatically” or “On Mouse Click.” Select “Automatically,” and set the time for zero seconds. Once again, test the slideshow to make sure everything works properly.

The second technique, a slide playing music when prompted,
Start by following Step 1 of the previous technique: Insert>Movies and Sounds>Sound from File.
The popup will appear asking if the file should play automatically; this time, select “no.”
The media file icon will appear on the slide. This time, leave it visible so you know where to click when you want the audio file to play.
Use the four boxes that surround the icon in order to adjust the size;
click and drag the icon to the desired location.

To add an audio loop so the music plays continuously,
open the “Custom Animation” dialogue box and select “Loop Until Stopped.”
If the audio is playing and you want to stop it, press the Esc key.
Again, test the slideshow to ensure that everything is working.

Sound Effect Background
To insert sound effects that will play through an entire slideshow,
first import the music file into your slide.
Open the Custom Animations box and check the box labeled “Play using animation order.”
Scroll down to select “Continue Slideshow.” This will enable the slideshow to work while the audio file is playing.
Continue scrolling down until you find the heading that reads “Stop Playing.”
Select “After,” and then insert the number of slides the music should play through after the current one. For example, if you insert the file on the first slide of a ten-slide presentation, and want the music to play through the rest of the slideshow,
type “9” into the box.
If you only want it to play through the fifth slide, type “4” into the box.

Of course, preview the slideshow to ensure that everything works.
